What a time to be alive. For the nerds, this probably is a thousand times truer for you than anyone else. Ten years ago, you’d never have seen a show like Game of Thrones ever get the green light for TV. To be honest, you’d never see the entire world actually be interested in a story about dragons, sword fights and Kings.
This is apparently the point in time where nerd stuff is cool now and I’m all for that. The world George R.R. Martin created with his books is nothing short of magic and even though there’s probably a million things we don’t know about the books, we always have to start somewhere. Here are five things you probably didn’t know about them.
- It’s not actually called Game of Thrones

via uplooder.net
George R.R. Martins’ book series is actually called “A Song Of Ice And Fire”. The phrase Game of Thrones is actually the title of the first book of the series called “ A Game of Thrones”, the show creators obviously got rid of the “A” and the rest was history. So next time you want to impress your friends just whip this little fact out.
- The Iron Throne is really really huge.

via pandawhale.com
Aegon the Conqueror who was the first of the Targaryen kings, after uniting all of the seven kingdoms formed a throne out of the blades of his fallen foes. Of course being a rockstar king, Aegon couldn’t just use a blacksmiths forge like all the other kings. Instead he melted them down with the fiery breath of his dragon, Balerion the Black Dread. Dope.
According to the author the Iron Throne is so large that it is physically impossible to move it, its more than forty feet high. That also explains why no one ever tried to actually steal it during any of the civil wars. It was usual for the rebels to steal any symbols of the crown to belittle their opponents power but it was probably easier to just steal his crown or something.
- The Wall

via gameofthrones.wikia.com
The Wall was apparently constructed by the children of the forest using solid ice with the help of magic and giants to protect them against the white walkers. Its supposedly 700 feet. So that means Jon and the willings that climbed it supposedly climbed 700 feet with no safety equipment. WOW.
- The Two Kings of the Iron Islands
The Iron Islands were once ruled by two kings – a rock king and a salt king. The former ruled the island itself, dispensing justice and making laws. The latter commanded at sea, whenever and wherever the island’s longships sailed. Sometimes these kings were father and son, other times they were from different houses. That being said, wouldn’t it be such a plot twist if Asha Greyjoy (yes, Theons sister is actually named Asha in the books not Yara like the series) and her uncle Euron just decided to take one of each crown and everyone lived happily ever after or at least as happily as you can on the Iron Islands? Any takers? No? Not enough fighting or dead people? Okay fine, you bloodthirsty monsters.
- The books are really old
Okay kids we’re about to do a little math. The first book of the series “A Game of Thrones” was released in 1996 and at the rate Mr. Martin is going the final instalment “The Winds of Winter” will probably come out late 2017. That’s almost 22 years! So if someone was 18 years old when they read the book in ’96 that means they’d be 40 when they read the final one. That’s trippy.
