Abraka located in Delta State is a fun touristy hideout for the fun adventurer looking for something different from the usual things to do these parts. While not all the activities listed below are in Abraka, they are all within a 20 to 30 minutes’ drive off the centre of the town.
Source of the River Ethiope
Believed to be the deepest inland waterway in Africa, the River Ethiope has its source in Umuaja which is about 30 minutes by road from Abraka. Some of the other major towns along its path before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean are Sapele and Koko. The source of this river can be said to be visually unspectacular when you consider how spectacular the river is in its depth and length. The source is at the foot of a tree in Umuaja.
Some say the tree is the source of the river. The tree might have just grown out of the source of the river though. If you choose to visit, there is a shrine there were sacrifices are offered and you might find a slaughtered goat or chicken being prepared for a sacrifice. And some sprinkled blood too.
An entrance fee is required at the shrine and is usually N300 (Three Hundred Naira).
- Polo and Horseback Riding
One of the resorts in Abraka, the Abraka Turf and Country Club Resort has a polo club and holds polo tournaments at certain times of the year (usually during Easter). You can also get a horseback ride at the resort as they have a stable of horses.
2) Canoeing/kayaking or Swimming in River Ethiope
River Ethiope is so clear that it is possible to see the bottom of the river in many places. This does give a false sense of depth and has been blamed for people drowning in it. Do not fret though, it is possible to find shallow areas to swim in. The Gordon’s Resort Hotel is one such place. The Abraka Turf and Country Club Resort also offers visitors the opportunity to go kayaking on the River Ethiope. You might have to inform them well in advance so arrangements can be made.
3) Quad Bike Riding
It is also possible to go on quad bike rides at the Abraka Turf and Country Club Resort especially if you are weary of walking. A 30 minutes ride costs N750 (Seven Hundred and Fifty Naira). So if you are feeling lazy or just up for it, hop on a quad.
4) Nature Hikes
There is a rich rainforest-like vegetation along the path of the River Ethiope. It is possible to walk from the Abraka Turf and Country Club Resort to the River Ethiope on a wooden walkway from within the confines of the resort. The distance is fairly long and the walkway is old an
d can be slippery so you will have to be extremely careful.
5) Golf
For the amateur or golf enthusiast The Abraka Turf and Country Club Resort has a golf course. So you can go on a vacation and still be able to get a round of golf off in a serene and relaxing atmosphere.
If you plan on making a visit to the Abraka Turf and Country Club Resort please call and make a reservation in advance. There are telephone numbers on their website and they also have a contact/email form you can use.
