The late photographer J.D Ojeikere is best known for his 1000 Nigeria hairstyles portrait series. The iconic images portrayed Nigerian women with beautifully simple yet complex hairstyles of weaving, thread and unique head gear. Medina Dugger, a photographer from California who is based in Lagos recently payed homage to the series by creating her own interpretation of Ojeikere’s work. Her photos with bright pops of color reflect a more modern time while still keeping the essence of the cultural hairstyles. The series is titled “Chrome” and Dugger described it as;
“an on-going series which celebrates women’s hairstyles in Lagos, Nigeria through a fanciful, contemporary lens. The images are inspired by hair color trends in Lagos and by the late Nigerian photographer J.D. Okhai Ojeikere, who photographed over a thousand different hair styles in his lifetime”
In ode to Nigeria celebrating democracy day, we share these stunning images with you in our own little way of saying Happy Democracy Day. Enjoy.
